Impulse for plant-based bio-economy - focus on photosynthesis

The year 2020 is characterized by the bio-economy and the transition to a circular agrifood system and biobased economy. Plant research and plant breeding are important drivers of this change, because plants and raw materials are among the most important sources of the bioeconomy.

Research and optimization of photosynthesis therefore plays an important role, but is by no means the only building block. The contribution of plant research and breeding to the bio-economy goes much further. As the most important biological process on earth, photosynthesis should nevertheless serve as a starting point for questions about the contribution of plant research and plant breeding to the transformation to the bio-economy and what the possibilities are to shape and promote the biologization of the economy.

 The SALON Global Agriculture focuses on three questions:

• What role does plant research play in the transition to the bio-economy?

• How can visibility, perception and acceptance of the bio-economy, plant research and plant breeding be improved?

• Where should new research priorities and financing policy priorities be established in the coming years?
